About the Author
John Hoskin is a British writer who has been based in Bangkok for the past 32 years. After completing a BA degree in History and a Masters in Cultural Studies at the University of Birmingham, England, he began his career in London. Subsequently, he lived and worked in Sydney, Amsterdam and Hong Kong before settling in Thailand. He is the author of more than 20 books on Thai and South-East Asian history, culture and travel, including Ten Contemporary Thai Artists,and The Mekong.

Each chapter can be taken as a slice of Thailand!

My entire family is enjoying this book. There aren't a lot of photos or pictures but each chapter is short and clear about the topic at hand. I can easily hand this book to someone open to the chapter on Songkran and have them understand what it is about in the 10 minutes it takes to read the chapter. Clean, Clear, Concise. Good stuff! Oh Courtney!

Ok, I realize this is very old, outdated, and Koontz' first major publication. It was a quick and easy read, and very predictable yet still enjoyable enough. I am currently on a mission to read all of Koontz' works. I just read Demon Seed,and now Shattered. I am reading them all in order. Although I should have saved Demon Seed for when it was updated. Which is why I am leaving Winter Moon and Icebound for their revised dates and moving on to Night Chills next.

Solid, but Very Dated Thriller

I remember reading "Shattered" ages ago, and really enjoying it. Seeing as how it clocks in at just over 200 pages, I recently picked it up again to pass the time on a lazy Sunday. The good news is that the base story of "Shattered" is still a gripping thriller. A man begins a cross-country drive from Philadelphia to San Francisco in order to make a fresh start in a new job with his new wife. Tagging along for the ride is the man's new "younger brother" through marriage. It's a chance for the two men to bond, get to know each other and prepare themselves for the momentus changes coming their way. Unfortunately, they've nabbed the attention of homicidal maniac who plans to waylay and murder them somewhere along their long journey.
It's a fun story, and as stated it's just barely over 200 pages, meaning you could retire the entire thing in half a day, or spread it out over two lunch hours. The story is reminicent of the films "Duel" and "Joy Ride". There is lots of action, and Koontz does a great job of ratcheting up the suspense as the story unfolds.
The only drawback to "Shattered", which first hit bookshelves in 1973, is that it is terribly dated. Quite a bit of the novel deals with the protagonist running into prejudice against "hippies". References to Vietnam and Charles Whitman's sniper shootings, as well as Charlie Manson and Richard Speck as recent events also tie the novel to a certain time in American history, which is now three decades past. The police in the story discuss the "freaks" tearing apart the moral fabric of the country seems pretty antiquated now as well.
I still recommend this novel, but would love to see Koontz update this story as he has done with "Twilight Eyes".

Too many loose ends

First of all, if you want a book you can read fast this is your book. It's a very short novel, one of Koont's first writings (which you can immediately tell by repeated references to the looks of the main characters, and the concept people, specially those in law enforcement, have of them). I did like the fast read and to tell the truth, I was glad to be able to read the novel after learning about it a few years ago, because I found the synopsis rather interesting.
The problem with this book however is that it leaves many loose ends and as fast as it goes it really avoids a deeper approach to the story. Many readers are reminded of Duel, I was also remimded of the movie Joyride, but to tell the truth we never get a real nailbiting, mind shredding chase on the highway itself, except when the van catches up with our heros in a deserted road. The book is broken down in six parts, one for each of six days (monday, tuesday...), but you start reading that they get a glimpse of the van on tuesday morning, they get scared about it, lose it, and on the next page it's already tuesday night.
Tension is better built on the second part of the book, specially towards the end but then the ending is too abrupt. As in Whispers this book has no epilogue, but you start feeling shoved to the exit.
One of the things I didn't like, and which I realized a little while after finishing the book, was the waste of time with the cop and the forensics technician. I remember a scene in the book when the cop is sitting at a restaurant (or a cafe, something along those lines) and the technician approches him all of a sudden and starts inquiring about the case. I had this image of the worried cop and the Gil Grissom-like tech coming up with a mindblowing way of how to catch the maniac, which would lead to a great climax, but then all of a sudden we never hear from them again. They are completely forgotten, so I don't really know why they were given the importance they were given in the first place.
Not the best Koontz I've read but it keeps you entertained for a while. If instead you wanna try a more interesting short novel by Koontz I would recommend The Voice of the Night.

About the Author
Jeehye You specializes in corporate governance, white-collar crime, business law, comparative law, sustainable development and the legal perspectives on corporate social responsibility (CSR). She has published articles on corporate governance reforms and business issues in comparative perspective. As a founder and chairperson of the Center for Global Law Initiatives (CGLI) at Galgotias School of Law, Professor You encourages advanced research and education to address global legal challenges by initiating a creative dialog among faculty, students, and legal experts in the world, facilitating the Center’s innovative and cooperative research. She is also engaged in legal and CSR practices as Advisor of CSR Initiatives at Korean Cultural Centre India, Embassy of the Republic of Korea and Global Regional Expert of law in the United States and India at Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA). She has been Visiting Scholar at University of Delhi, and Global Research Fellow of Global Legislation Research Center at Korea Legislation Research Institute (KLRI). She earned a J.S.D. (Doctor of Law) from Washington University School of Law with Marion C. Early Scholarship for her academic excellence, an LL.M. from The George Washington University Law School, and an LL.B. and an LL.M. from Ajou University with Chancellor’s Award.

Intelligent ideas, organized nicely, Worth a look.

Overall very pleased with his purchased. I own 20+ soccer books and hundreds of hours of DVDs. The drills explained were not necessarily new to me but the way the book was organized was professional and attractive to myself as a coach. I will get lots of use from these exercises and this is a great addition to my coaching materials. I appreciated the explanation as to how certain drills can be done better and more creatively. Book offers intelligent ideas as to why we should coach a certain way.

A great resource for improving passing, receiving, possession and decision-making. The drawings and instructions are clear, the progressions are helpful and the questions and challenges for players ensure specific attention to detail and improvement. I tried several exercises from the book with my team and thanks to the variety, players were motivated and engaged.

Ammianus Marcellinus, ca. 325–ca. 395 CE, a Greek of Antioch, joined the army when still young and served under the governor Ursicinus and the emperor of the East Constantius II, and later under the emperor Julian, whom he admired and accompanied against the Alamanni and the Persians. He subsequently settled in Rome, where he wrote in Latin a history of the Roman empire in the period 96–378 CE, entitled Rerum Gestarum Libri XXXI. Of these 31 books only 14–31 (353–378 CE) survive, a remarkably accurate and impartial record of his own times. Soldier though he was, he includes economic and social affairs. He was broadminded towards non-Romans and towards Christianity. We get from him clear indications of causes of the fall of the Roman empire. His style indicates that his prose was intended for recitation.

Late Rome's Greatest Historian

Since there are so many of these darn things the review shall be divided into three sections. First, a brief description of the Loeb series of books and their advantages/disadvantages. Second shall be my thoughts on the author himself, his accuracy, as well as his style and the style of his translator. This is of course only my opinion and should be treated as such. The final part shall review what this particular book actually covers.

The Loeb series date back to the turn of the last century. They are designed for people with at least some knowledge of Greek or Latin. They are a sort of compromise between a straight English translation and an annotated copy of the original text. On the left page is printed the text in Greek or Latin depending on the language of the writer and on the right side is the text in English. For somebody who knows even a little Greek or Latin these texts are invaluable. You can try to read the text in the original language knowing that you can correct yourself by looking on the next page or you can read the text in translation and check the translation with the original for more detail. While some of the translations are excellent mostly they are merely serviceable since they are designed more as an aid to translation rather than a translation in themselves. Most of them follow the Greek or Latin very closely. These books are also very small, maybe just over a quarter the size of your average hardcover book. This means that you'll need to buy more than just one book to read a complete work. They are also somewhat pricey considering their size. The Loeb Collection is very large but most of the more famous works can be found in better (and cheaper) translations elsewhere. If you want to read a rarer book or read one in the original language then you can't do better than the Loeb Editions.

There are three volumes of Ammianus' surviving works. Ammianus is the Tacitus of the 4th Century. His work originally picked up where Tacitus left off but only the portion from 353-378 AD has survived. His work is easy to read, generally accurate, and filled with exciting events and interesting characters. Ammianus was a career soldier who was an active participant in many of the events he describes. He knew personally many of the people who's deeds he relates. The real hero of his book is the emperor Julian. Julian the Apostate is a very sympathetic character to modern minds, and Ammianus both liked and admired him. Further sources on Julian's campaigns include his own writings (Volume I, Volume II, and Volume III), Zosimus' Historia Nova, and the remains of Eunapius in 'The Classicising Roman Historians.' Ammianus was the last great Latin historian. All of those other sources are in Greek. A better translation would probably be the Penguin one called The Later Roman Empire, although the translation here is alright. The other Loeb editions are available here and here.

This volume covers Julian's rise to Augustus, his reign, and his campaign against the Persians. The entire volume of 6 books and 650 pages takes place over only 5 years, so this is a detailed look at the period. It also covers the death of Julian, the brief reign of Jovian, and the early years of Valentinian and Valens. Books 23, 24, and the first few chapters of 25 cover Julian's Persian Campaign. I know of no more detailed narrative of a Roman campaign unless it be Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic War, the Civil Wars, and the Alexandrian, African, and Spanish Wars.

No Royal Road

"No Royal Road" is a wonderful book about the remarkable experiences of a young Hungarian girl who tries to escape from Communism, hoping to establish her new life in the new world - America. One of the most interesting aspects of the book is that it describes real events happening before, during and after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. The combination of real historical events with an interesting personal story makes the book not only an appealing piece of literature but also an outlook into the life of the Eastern Europeans of the middle 20th century and the new problems thay had to deal with.

We thoroughly enjoyed reading "No Royal Road" about the amazing life experiences of Julianna when she was a young Hungarian girl on the road to becoming a confident and accomplished young lady. Following her life under the harsh nazi occupation, through difficult war times and communism, and the Hungarian Revolution which ultimately lead to her new life in America was truly inspiring.
