Who would think that an unfinished autobiography could be so good? But despite its rough edges and the odd passage of interest only to the author, the Life of Henry Brulard is very good indeed, and as moving as The Red and the Black. Early in the Life, Stendhal describes the pleasure of reading Florentine goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini's memoirs, so fresh, he notes, that they seem to have been written yesterday. The same could be said for Stendhal's own autobiography.

I didn't look forward to trying this book---memoirs of childhood seldom do much for me---but there being so little Stendhal out there in translation, I couldn't overlook it. Well, long book tho it is, H.B. is very readable and a lot of fun for those who love Stendhal's style and persona. Chatty, honest, quirky (all those little maps!), skipping around madly, with the strange mix of irony and idealism that makes Stendhal so "modern," this is an enjoyable book for "the happy few." I doubt there are many books like it---Rousseau's confessions feel much more polished, & hence less "real," than Stendhal's book does. (Of course I'm agnostic on how honest S. really is---but it's a good book, true or not!)

excellent book, bad edition
By Disappointing
The edition of this book is very bad with plenty of spelling errors which at times make sentences difficult to understand. example: "eveque" (bishop) nine times out of ten is printed as "evoque" (to evoke), "maintenant" (now)becomes "main tenant" (hand holding (?))the first name "Boniface" at one stage becomes "Bon il face" (good he face (?)) and so on and so forth.

Very sloppy work from Amazon for one of the most important French novel of the XIX century.

Delightful and yummy!

As a long time reader of Katrina's blogs, I have tried many of her recipes over the years. I can vouch for the ease of preparation, tastiness and economical factor on your budget. The recipes are simple enough for the beginner cook and tasty enough for the recipients to ask for seconds. The recipes admittedly do not fall under "healthy" eating, but readily bring back memories of my childhood table. I was confident enough that I would enjoy the recipes, that I did not even bother to "look inside" the book before purchasing. I found the first part of the book to be a delightful surprise and a sharp reminder that I used to cook with focus and love but now consider it an annoying, necessary task. Is it any wonder that my family now considers meal time an annoying interruption of more important things? Tonight's meal will be created with the focused intention of nurturing myself and my family. Thank you for the reminder of what it important, Katrina.

Goddess in the Kitchen

After reading the Energy Magic Series, I was curious as to how I could apply what I had learned about Energy Magic in the kitchen. I hate to cook. So, when I saw Miss Katrina had written a cookbook, I was happy to get a chance to review it for her. This fun book gently leads you into the kitchen and walks you through how to infuse good, positive energy into it, and make cooking a joy, or at least renew the joy that was once there. I found out a lot about the history of some of our food traditions, but more importantly, how to infuse Energy Magic into my kitchen. This book, incidentally, does nothing to offend anyone of any religion...because any good Bible student knows there's a lot of spiritual energy out there just waiting for us to tap into it. (It really worked! I tried a brand new recipe of my own creation, and it turned out really well! If you knew me, you would know how awesome that is, because I usually hate cooking!) The best part of all, is after learning how to bring the positive energy in to help me, I wandered through the recipe section of the book and was delighted to find good ol' Southern Home Cookin'!!! Comfort food, easy to fix, delicious and filling!! No complicated recipes to confuse and discourage, and a lot of humor and surprises along the way. This book gives food for both the tummy and the soul!

So much more than a Cookbook

I have a large virtual bookshelf of books I have not read yet, but this one captured me right away. Compared to other cookbooks, I found the book very lacking. However, this book was not intended to be "just a cookbook". In my opinion, I found the book more focusing on the history of our relationship with food, and how we can use our energies to make the food better. If you're looking for a book with a collections of "Healthy Living" recipes in it, this is not for you. This book has some "Comfort Foods" recipes in it, but that is not the focus of the book.

I hate to cook. It's one of those "Mom" jobs that is lost on me and makes me impatient. This book showed me how to make cooking more fun, to the point that I am cooking more foods than I ever have before. It shows in the food, too. I have made several meals now for family and friends, and all have said the same thing; Magnificent. I recommend the book to all of my friends that don't like to cook and will continue to practice what I have gained from Goddess In the Kitchen: The Magic and Making of Food for the rest of my life.

Just decent book

Ok, the bad news first: I have never, EVER in my entire life read a book so poorly edited. What the HELL was the editor doing here? CRACK??? Seriously, several of the same chapters appear TWICE in the book!?! Yeah, you got it: the same chapters over and over again! Several paragraphs also reappear right after each other and there are many spelling mistakes. There are TONS of mistakes like this in the book - and such mistakes are like cryptonite to me. Again, I've never seen anything like it - and it looks EXTREMELY unproffesional.

Still, I kept reading the book because there are also some good news: the author has some pretty interesting/funny ideas that make it a worthwhile read. The book is very tounge-in-cheek and I found myself almost laughing to tears at times. So, because of the humorous tone of the book - all the editing mistakes became somewhat charming in a bizarre way. The author also has quite a few good tips on how to really live and how to get the most pleasure out of life. Pretty cool after all!

A very funny book - actually listened to it on CD - would've thought the other 2 reviewers were gals - girls, unless open minded with a good sense of humor, will probably not see 2 much humor in this book, but GUYS,this is funny - plus, it provides some good advice in a shallow, cave man sort of way. :-)
