From the Prologue: At noon on June 27, 1941, Father declared decisively “Liuba, we have to run immediately!” Mother hesitated, but Father insisted and was not about to give in. With his violin in one hand and a small bag in the other, he led Jaka and me to the doorway. Mother still held back. She was very reluctant to leave our home. Father kept pleading. “Liuba, I know the Germans well and what they’re capable of doing. They’ll bring death.” Finally, Mother relented. The four of us ran toward Riga’s central railroad station. When we finally reached the station, the train was already filled with others trying to flee. With great effort, we found a crowded compartment and managed to wedge ourselves in. We sat for over an hour waiting for the train to depart. Mother was extremely anxious and finally could sit no longer. “I need to check once more,” she said. “I want to be sure everything is locked.” I moved swiftly to the door to bar her way, I was strong enough to prevent her from leaving. But, in her soft manner, Mother begged me to let her go. “I’ll be back in ten minutes.” Sitting next to me, my Father appealed, “Let her go. She will be back.” With that, I unwillingly gave in and Mother left the train. We could only sit and wait anxiously for her to return. A few minutes after Mother left, Latvian Fifth Column Diversionist snipers zeroed in on our train as I was standing outside the car. I was trying to see if I could spot Mother. A Russian soldier fired back as the bullets whistled around him. He protected himself by hiding behind one of the car wheels. I hid behind another. Then a second soldier ran past us and I heard a terrible explosion. The soldier was blown to pieces by a hand grenade. Almost immediately, the train began to move. Shaken and gasping for air, I quickly jumped aboard, as the train’s speed began to increase. After traveling almost three kilometers, the train stopped again for about two hours, and then it rolled on eastwards toward the Russian Inland. An hour later, the railroad behind us was completely cut off by the Spearhead of the SS Dead Skull Division. Our train was the only one to leave Riga. Although our Mother told us she wanted to check the house one more time, her real intention was to try and convince her brother to join us. She did not succeed and in the process failed to return before the train left. That was the last time we ever saw our Mother. I should not have let her leave, despite my Father’s assurances. Gripping and heart wrenching

This was a gripping and heart wrenching account of one mans experience through World War II and the holocaust. The trials this man, his family, and his people went through seems more then anyone could bear, yet he never gave up. This is such an important piece of history.

A stunning book about the HIV Trial in Libya. A survival story of Good v Evil

I'm half way through the book. It's a very good book, based on the horrifying truth of the Libyan HIV Trials.

Mesmerizing, horrific, sad, an absolute tragedy.

The absolute horror that was inflicted on Mrs. Chervenyashka and her collegues is a stunning, disgusting tragedy perpetrated by pure EVIL. The men (and one woman!) that held and tortured these poor innocent caregivers, disgraced themselves, Libya, and all of humanity.

Mrs. Chervenyashka is an amazing woman with an enduring strength I've never witnessed in real life.

God Bless her, the other scapegoats, and the almost 300 children that were needlessly
and carelessly infected with HIV.

Great book!I couldn't put down until finished it!Very deep,emotional,heartfelt story of a strong women thrown in jail for something she has never done,but yet she has been prosecuted,tortured,went true traumatic years of undeserved punishment far from her home country.I did grow up in Bulgaria and for me the story feels so close to my heart even if I have not known any of the imprisoned victims,I was touched by their life story,by their strong faith,by their love for life and their hope for humanity after all they have been true...Very raw,real,touching story and a must read!

Not very helpful

I was hoping this book would be helpful in explaining how better to prepare letter to outside auditors regarding my clients. Most of the book was not helpful at all. The meat, so to speak, could be in a small pamphlet. Plus this book for a small paperback was quite expensive. I was not satisfied with the product.

About the Author

Philip R. Popple is Professor and BSW Director at the University of Texas at Arlington School of Social Work. His MSW and Ph.D. are both from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis. He is the author of three social work texts, and and editior of two. He has numerous publications in social work journals and presentations at professional conferences. His practice experience is in child welfare, public welfare administration and planning, and staff development. This book is fantastic for people who are conceptual learners. It made the neuroanatomy easy to understand, as well as the functional aspects of neurology. The book was actually missing page 10 and 11 (ie page 9 was printed on one page and page 12 was on the next page). Other than that, fantastic, very happy!

A great book for any age. This book is informative read with use of pictures and analogies. You do not have to be medical student to understand this concise and entertaining book. Great primer for people who want to an overview of the brain in relation to a traumatic brain issue.
