A Well Crafted Repertoire Book for White against the Sicilian Defense

The Sicilian defense is the most popular response to 1.e4 for several reasons. First, the pawn structure is unbalanced from the beginning of the game. After 3.d4 cxd4 black gets a central pawn majority duo versus a white pawn on e4. Second, in the open Sicilian white has to take risk to win the game and every move in the opening and middle game are critical. In other words, White has to learn a lot of theory to avoid losing a miniature. Third, the sharp Sicilian middle games from the open Sicilian are a paradox. White may claim a theoretical edge after burning the midnight oil studying theory, but white can no claim that the game is fully under his control. If White lacks a full grip on the actions that means that Black can generate play on his own and create winning chances. Many white players avoid the problems posed by the Sicilian defense by switching to 1.d4. A second group of players sticks with the open Sicilian and use a tactical, sharp approach against the combative Sicilian defense. A third group of players decide to meet the Sicilian half way, with a positional and active repertoire. If you prefer the third approach against the Sicilian defense, please keep reading on.

Alexei Kornev is the author of the book, Rossolimo and Friends. This book is a repertoire book for White against the Sicilian defense and the recommendations have a solid positional foundation. The author databases and his own analysis to illustrate his recommendations. The books is composed with hundreds of game fragments of games in contrast to the complete game format favored by Gawain Jones in his repertoire book versus the Sicilian (2011). The format selected by Kornev to write this book provides the reader with the right mix of old and recent games, more content than the complete game format and more references to continue his own studies. Every chapter ends with a summary. I recommend the reader to read the summary first to get a better idea of what the chapter is about and what are the better lines for White or the lines that are really bad for black. I found Kornev’s explanations clear, concise and to the point, but the reader will need a good positional background to get the best of the book.

Rossolimo and Friends is an advance book suitable for players looking to improve his/her chances against the Sicilian using a solid, positional method.

Initially, many of her examples suit the energetic narrative. Ultimately, however, her random musings result in an awkward presentation when her thoughts turn to her own internal interests and ambitions. The didactic conclusion stunts the lighthearted story. Cleland's watercolor and pen-and-ink spreads lend cheerful color to the vignettes, and Trixie's a lovable pup with her rosy cheeks, large grin, and red bows tucked behind her ears. His New Favorite Bedtime Story

I have always been a fan of Dean Koontz and yet had not seen anything about this children's book. For Christmas a friend of the family's gave the book to my little boy; a 2 year old. It is OUR favorite bed time story now and I am loving every evening with it. Jak loves the "puppies" and says hello to "Wixie" every evening. Thank you to Dean Koontz for channeling your inner child for our children. Please Thank Trixie as well.

Spoil you dog

Trixie is a special dog who is allowed to do many things a capable dog can do, but she dreams of doing more. Just about any adult who has owned a dog can find something to identify with in this 'children's' book. Good for lighthearted laughter and memories of that special dog from back when. The illustrations match the tone of the words. A fun book for adults.

Ehhhh....

Everything about this book is kinda "meh". Writing quality, characters, story. All rather uninteresting to me. I read the first book in this series as well, and felt similarly ambivalent. Mostly I'm just tired of seeing men being in charge during all the sex, but after "50 shades" that seems to be all there is out there. Also of men who are 6' 5". Anyway, there's chemistry I suppose, but it doesn't feel all that realistic. And their relationship barely extends to anything but sex, yet they end up basically together in the end. That really could have developed more, literally every time they're together they just fall into bed. How about a conversation? That, and the woman's confidence issues get extremely tiresome after the first few times we encounter them, as well as her family relationship. Her father and mother seem like cartoon kids movie characters, they're practically comical they're so bluntly "evil". I wish I had good things to say, because the idea and plot of the story could have been really good. It just didn't quite make it for me.
