Unpretentious & Funny!

The story revolves around three best friends on a college campus. First is Yatharth, always in the top few of his class, a junior researcher and new to the field of love and dating. Then comes Sudeep - the class topper, junior researcher and king of sarcasm. Third in the bandwagon is Vikalp. His rank is somewhere in the middle of his class, pro at bunking classes, an athlete with a rich but estranged father. He is also somewhere who always puts himself out there with little or no luck. Enter Sanchita into the plot, she is a sweet and beautiful girl who is also the reason for Yatharth's baby steps into the dating world. And the whole plot is based on the college life, so things are bound to go crazy. You have to actually read the book to find out where, how and exactly how far things can go!

If you are thinking, `Oh gawd! Not another campus story', I won't blame you because that's exactly what I thought too. But I have been following the author's personal blog, A Bug in My mind, for quite some time and the one thing I knew for sure was that no matter what the plot is all about or how the characters turn out, they would be presented wrapped up in a very modest writing style infused with a good amount of humour. And I was right!

In his own words, through Yatharth, the author makes it very clear that this isn't another IIT campus story in the very first chapter. He then goes on to introduce the other major characters in the protagonist's life in a very casual way. As we get acquainted to everyone around him, and his life picks up a rhythm, we realize that the author has actually introduced the protagonist himself through his friends and family. I liked Yatharth! He may be a confused nerd, but at the end of the day he is a very decent guy. Though one may feel that the protagonist should not be average or just decent, but someone who stands out in a crowd - well in present times, a decent guy actually stands out in a crowd and for a change I can actually relate to him. Sanchita is a perfect match for Yatharth too. She is quick to decide and take action and she too is quite a decent girl. I could actually continue my rant on each of the characters, but that would actually make this review a bit too long. So I will limit myself by saying that Sudeep & Vikalp are extreme personalities and each bring in something to the story and to Yatharth's life. Like all real friendships, there's no reason or rhyme to as why these thre guys would be friends, but they do carry the spirit really well. Yatharth's father is one character that should receive special mention. He is the one person everyone would wish their fathers' were like. Open-minded and fun! I looked forward to his appearances.

The plot itself is pretty simple - no out of the world experiences. Instead college life is portrayed as it most commonly experienced. Bunking classes, flirting with girls, bunking with friends in hostel, the first drink and the first love. I guarantee that not once will you feel the great Hollywood / Bollywood experience. In fact, there'll be a number of time you'll go thinking - `I have done that' or `that guy in my class was like that' or `yes one of my friends did that too'. Unlike the `other campus stories' I have read in recent times, this was a refreshing change with its true to life depiction of situation and characters that I could relate to. Love and relationships are depicted just as you know them. There is no evil villain hanging out in the shadows or promises of bringing the moon and the stars or ultra-romantic dates on the beach and dancing in the woods in the next minute. Writing style of Shubham was just as I had expected it - modest and the dialogues were said in normal college goer lingo rather than flowery or too-cool-for-you language.

As for the cons of this book, I feel it could have done with a stricter editing. There were some small typos and missed spaces. It did distract me at times.

I have spent quite some time reviewing the book in my mind before sitting down to write this review because I didn't want it to be biased when I put it out. So, to round up my review, I would like to let you folks know that this book is in no way a literary genius, nor does it deserve a noble prize. But it deserves at least a single read for being a modest representation of that special phase of our lives and also because of Sudeep & Vikalp's sarcasm are just that funny!

GOOD BUT NEEDS TWEAKING

I was impressed with the variety of different recipes in this collection. I like that the book did not center only one type of protein to make a meal. Chicken as well as ground beef, steak and shrimp were key players in recipes making it appeal to many appetites.

I am an experienced cook (cocking for well over 50 years). I did not try these recipes but I plan to try a few soon. I did read through them all and they sound like good recipes with promise.

My main critique is with the details. In recipes the size of cans were not detailed, such as a "can of diced tomatoes" needed for Cheesy Pasta Skillet. Is that a 15 oz. can or a 28 oz. can?

In Salmon Patties how large is that can of Salmon?

In Pizza Pasta, exactly how large is "1 package pepperonis"?

In one recipe Italian Seasoning is used and in another Dry Italian Seasoning. One recipe calls for Sriracha Sauce and in another it calls for Sriracha.

If more attention were paid to these details I feel that this book could truly be more useful to the very inexperienced cook.

Perfect for all skill levels in the kitchen

This is one of the best cookbooks I have ever read for a beginning cook. Perfect for a young adult who is just finding their way around a kitchen.

Hannah P. Scott breaks the steps down so well that even a child could use this cookbook with the help of an adult. She tells you what the meat should look like, and what to do before going onto the next step. She even tells you which pans to use.

I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone you want to feel comfortable in the kitchen.

Emma, an antique, anthropomorphic steam engine, carries Luke, the engineer; and Jim Button, a small black boy, on a fairy-tale search and rescue mission for a Chinese princess. The three travel from Morrowland, an island nation so small its king thinks one more subject (Jim) will crowd the place, through China to find Princess Li Si in Dragontown of Sorrowland. Emma, who may well be mother of "The Little Engine That Could," is the best drawn character. Overmuch description and cutesy comment make pages--but not much interest. The book of my life

When I was but a little child, my mother read this book to me. She also read other books, but mostly, I insisted we return to this. Later I was so annoyed I had to wait until the evening to have another chapter read to me, that I taught myself to read, in order to be able to read it myself. I had read both Jim Button books front to back before I even entered school.
My life changed, my tastes changed, but Jim Button always stayed with me. I was a child, I read Jim Button. I was a pubescent teenager, I read Jim Button. I was a partying student, I read Jim Button. I'm writing a PhD thesis, and I'm reading Jim Button.
I have read many hundred books in my life. I have read pulp fantasy and nobel prize literature. Some books I reread two or three times, but nothing comes close to the Jim Button books that I read so often I cannot even remember. I know absolutely everything that happens in these books, I can quote entire passages by heart, but each time I read it, I enjoy it as much as I did when I was a child.

But why are these books so great? First, there is the outer side of it. These books have everything that a boy - and a man who has not forgotten his inner child - loves. There are dragons and pirates and steam engines. Kings and princesses, giants and half dragons! Steam engines that have their own mind and can get children. Steam engines that can swim. Steam engines that can fly. And steam engines that dress up as dragons! I mean, seriously, it cannot get any better than that. And all the while it is not a silly fantasy book where steam engines can fly "because they can", no there is a logical explanation for everything. For a child, these books are just plain fun. I remember how I hated it, when a children's book tried to shove a message down my throat. Today I notice that these books, while being charmingly politically incorrect (publisher's possibly wouldn't dare publish it these days), these books teach more about friendship, tolerance and bravery than all of today's politically correct and educationally valuable children's books.

But apart from the content being great, the book is also written extremely well. It takes children seriously. I remember well, how some children's book authors obviously think children were dumb. Not so Michael Ende. The language (at least in the German version) is extremely good, and of better quality than many "serious" books I have read. Michael Ende does not shy away from using advanced words, but works in little explanations for the children. Every character in the book has his or her unique way of speaking and you recognize everyone's style immediately. Additionally, the books are well thought out from start to finish. Michael Ende in this children's book achieves what many "adult" fantasy author's never manage: There is a plot that arches both books in the series. Additionally each book has its own subplot. Each chapter has its own subplot again. And everything fits together intricately and is wrapped up nicely. Of all the books I have read very few are so perfectly crafted regarding both plot and language.

With all that said, I want to add a large thank you to Michael Ende for enkindling my love for books. And if you have children, I urge you to read Jim Button to them. I guarantee that they will love it.

Fantastic, fun and deeper than it seems

I love this book, I mean, my little daughter, 6, loves it :-)

Michael Ende was a master, perhaps "the" master would be more accurate, at crafting children's books that give the parents something to think about as well.

The most important thing about Jim Knopf (I've only read it in the original German) is of course that it's FUN. I can't imagine any kid not being totally engrossed in the story once it starts. Chapter for chapter, the story moves very quickly from one adventure to the next, always building up just the right amount of tension and suspense without ever becomming gratuitously shocking.

The story itself is about as original possible, it's all Michael Ende's imagination and there are no clichés, no "been there, done that" material. Of course, I can't speak for the english translation, but the language used by Ende in the original is a little advanced for really small kids. Personally, I see it a chance to "smarten up" as opposed to the usual "dumbing down" found in most (all?) modern children's books.

Like I said above, there's more to Jim Button than is first apparent. One example, among many: the Dragon City. I don't know how it's expressed in the English version but in the original, the dragons are mean and cruel and dirty and... UNHAPPY. Their secret wish is to be "saved" from the evil of their city and to become re-born as the "Golden Drangon of Wisdom". They are literally awaiting a "Saviour" and Frau Mahlzahn (the dragon that held the children captive, don't know her english name) is not so much "captured" in the way a superficial reading of the book would suggest but rather saved. She is transported through the cleansing waters of the Yellow River where her fire goes out and her evil spirit is extinguished. This is a baptism, and on a very grand scale.

Another: The "Scheinriese", the Giant who apears bigger and scarier the further away you are from him. When I read this part to my daughter, she said, "It's sort of like my swimming class". I thought, "Huh, how'd you get so smart?". She made the connection herself. Her first two swimming lesson have been horrifying for her, even though they're really completely harmless fun and the instructors are wonderfully gentle and patient. So, she recognized that sometimes things seem a lot scarier before we actually confront them and that most fear exists in our imagination and it can overcome. Rarely is anything as bad as we think it's going to be.

Michael Ende was in a class by himself. He wrote serious literature that also appeals to children. He invented a genre and he was the master. Although his other books are more "mature" than this one, Jim Button and Luke remain my, yes, my :-) favorite.

Children's fantasy

Ask readers what they connect with fantasy books for children, and most will come up with the answer Harry Potter. But there were fantasy books before Harry came. The German writer Michael Ende is one of the many writers who have written wonderful stories, both for children and for grown ups. The story about Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver is one of them.
Luke lives on a tiny, tiny island together with just a handful of other people. One day the postman arrives with a very special delivery, a small packet containing an even smaller little boy. The boy remains at the island and gets the name Jim Button.
Everybody loves Jim, but when he growns bigger the island becomes too small for the people living there. Luke decides that he is the one who has to go, toether with his tank engine. Jim goes with him, in secret, and from here on the adventures of the two friends starts.
The book is a wonderful tale of friendship and love, and also a story to teach children to overcome their fears, to believe in their own strength, and still be allowed to show your weakness. I have read the book together with my six years old daughter, and it has given us many great reading hours. Actually we are still enjoying being together with Jim and Luke, now reading the sequel to the book.

Best Children's Bible I've Ever Encountered

I used to work for a Christian bookstore and have seen dozens of children's Bibles by various publishers. This is the best I've ever encountered. Why?

1) Accurate Bible accounts. (no extra-Biblical nonsense, like "Joseph loved his new coat so much, he even wore it when he slept!")

2) Key details of the Biblical accounts are NOT withheld or edited out. The accounts have the original meaning. (I've seen Adam and Eve stories where they just lived happily in the garden and slept under the stars, or David and Goliath stories where Goliath was smiling as he was hit with a stone.)

3) Culturally/historically relevant illustrations. Even though they are still "simple" illustrations they are the most true to the time period, culture that I've ever seen in a child's Bible for a young reader. There are some exceptions but the pictures are far from being absurd. (Another review mentioned the "bulgey-eyed" characters of another Bible. I'm familiar with it. Women are almost always depicted with pearl "Barbara Bush" earrings, Joseph sleeps on a mattress and boxspring with an orange tabby curled up at his feet, and Noah's wife carries Red Delicious apples in a basket to smiling, rather than ferocious animals. Another children's Bible we have depicts evil characters smiling sweetly while engaging in wicked activities, like trying to kill someone.)

4) Readable text in a simple-understand style for wide age span. This Bible was a gift to my 2-year old when, exasperated with our numerous but inferior children's Bibles, I commissioned my father-in-law with the nearly impossible task of finding a "good" children's Bible. Well, he came through! She loves having it read to her nightly. She loves paging through it independently and remembering the accounts. I find her doing this almost daily, unprompted by me. And I know it will serve her well until she can read the text for herself. It even has parent pages. Great for the family.

5) Rather complete. This is one of the most complete collection of Bible accounts from the Old and New Testaments that I've ever seen.

6) Fantastic price.

The other types of Bibles may seem innocent enough, but I worried about what they would imply about history or culture by their anachronistic and Western (and at times cheesy) text and artwork. To conclude, I feel this Bible does a good job supporting my goal of teaching my daughter accurately (by what is said and seen) from the very start.

A Good Children's Bible for Strong Readers

This review is based on my comparison of 20 different children’s Bibles (CB). I first determined the appropriate age group of the Bibles, then pinned them on the scale of dynamic (sense for sense) or formal (word for word) equivalence:

D2 (Most dynamically equivalent, a rather “free” translation with creative license)
D1 (More dynamically equivalent)
N (Neutral, somewhat dynamic and somewhat formal)
F1 (More formally equivalent)
F2 (Most formally equivalent, a rather “rigid” translation with little variance from the original text)

Then, I used the following criteria to judge the usefulness of the Bibles:

Scriptural Fidelity: Does the CB accurately convey the message of the original text of Scripture without adding extraneous details or subtracting essential details?
Theology: Does the CB feature orthodox and appropriate theological interpretation that highlight the main idea and purpose of the text? Does it look ahead to Jesus Christ who fulfills the whole Scripture (Matthew 5:17-20)?
Comprehensiveness: Does the CB include most of the stories from the original text of Scripture?
Storytelling: Is the narrative flow of the CB fluent, clear, engaging, and inspiring?
Illustration: Are the accompanying illustrations in the CB colorful, beautiful, imaginative, intelligible, and faithful to the cultural context and the original text of Scripture?
Interactiveness: Does the CB involve the reader in dialogue? Does it include questions, summaries, and other interactive features that facilitate understanding and encourage personal response?

Comment: The Read and Learn Bible sticks pretty closely to the original text of Scripture. It offers no additional theological interpretation. However, it has helpful study notes interspersed throughout the stories. For example, a study note explains that “The Hebrew word for Adam means ‘of the ground’ or ‘from the red earth’ and is also used as a general word for ‘humankind’ or ‘people’” (15). The illustrations are colorful and beautiful, but most characters have staid expressions.

Awesome Bible for Beginning Readers!

My (...) son has been learning to read. I checked out a popular beginning reader book from the library and he hated it. He's been asking to read the Bible, so when I found this I was so excited! It's written at around a late first to early second grade reading level. The stories are short enough that he can read one every day and the pictures are great (full color illustration on every page done in the same style that's on the cover). It's really improved his reading confidence!

I have always loved Hannah Howell's novels and this one was no different. I have all the previous books in the series as well.

I was really excited to read this book, it got such good reviews. Howell's diction was great no doubt but the story was really slow. I almost didn't finish it, I even skipped pages and didn't miss anything of importance. It just seemed like a lot was happening in the book but nothing was really going on...if that make's since. The story just seemed to start dragging about have way through the book.

Still hanging in there

Well, here we are are at issue two. Things have improved a bit. The writing style has gelled a bit and the content seems a bit more professional. I am holding out hope for something spectacular as this magazine evolves. We NEED a decent scifi magazine in this country. C'mon guys, get it together!! Good luck!

Rindra Ramamonjison

Rindra Ramamonjison is a fourth year PhD student of electrical engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. He received his master's degree from Tokyo Institute of Technology. He has played various roles in many engineering companies, within telecom and finance industries. His primary research interests are machine learning, optimization, graph processing, and statistical signal processing. Rindra is also the co-organizer of the Vancouver Spark Meetup.

This book is easy to read with a promise to provide step by step procedures to learn Apache Spark Graph Processing. To the most extent, Mr. Rindra Ramamonjison fulfills the promise. There are several errors in the book as such reader gets confused and can not be followed through the text. For example, spark-1.4.1-bin-hadoop2.6.tgz does not have the directories: core, graphx, mllib, sql, and streaming in SPARKHOME. Also, in the directory data, there are no files such as people.csv and links.csv.

Apart from the above superficial errors, the book met my expectation to learn Graph Processing.
