But the resilience of the country and its people, the resolve of the judiciary and hints of reform in the army may open a new and more stable chapter in its history.

About the Author

Christophe Jaffrelot is Research Director at CNRS and teaches South Asian Politics and History at Sciences Po (Paris). From 2000-8, he was Director of CERI at Sciences Po. Arguably one of the world's most respected writers on Indian society and politics, his publications include India's Silent Revolution: The Rise of the Lower Castes in North India; Religion, Caste and Politics in India; and Muslims in Indian Cities, all of which are published by Hurst.

A depressing but very accurate description of Pakistan's destabilizing role: An International Migraine without relief

The granularity of discussions with extensive presentation of evidence makes this a good read. The 'Strategic Depth' foolishness, the jihadist factory, Islamist revival are all well known stories. However, the extent of duplicity, the sans forethought move to radicalize civil society and the integration of terror as a sophisticated state instrument protected by nuclear blackmail make this an important read.

Combining with Basharat Peer's book that showcases Pak terror in kashmir, Christine Fair and Ahmed Rashid's books, this book is yet another piece of the terror-jihad jigsaw puzzle depressingly falling into place. If I was the Indian Foreign and Defence Ministries, I would not hope for anything good anytime soon... if any the worst may be yet to come as a schizophrenic, crazy state intensifies its 'delusions of grandeur'.

Thomas Hardy, OM (2 June 1840 – 11 January 1928) was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, especially William Wordsworth. Charles Dickens was another important influence. Like Dickens, he was highly critical of much in Victorian society, though Hardy focused more on a declining rural society.

While Hardy wrote poetry throughout his life and regarded himself primarily as a poet, his first collection was not published until 1898. Initially, therefore, he gained fame as the author of novels, including Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891), and Jude the Obscure (1895). However, beginning in the 1950s Hardy has been recognised as a major poet; he had a significant influence on the Movement poets of the 1950s and 1960s, including Philip Larkin.

Most of his fictional works – initially published as serials in magazines – were set in the semi-fictional region of Wessex. They explored tragic characters struggling against their passions and social circumstances. Hardy's Wessex is based on the medieval Anglo-Saxon kingdom and eventually came to include the counties of Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset, Devon, Hampshire and much of Berkshire, in southwest and south central England.

This book is fantastic for college too! 10 stars

I come from a family of 15, if you include my mom and dad, (9 other brothers and 3 sisters, if I remember correctly). When I was in grade school some of my brothers would taunt me and say "You're so stupid, why even go to school?" I just wasn't interested in school work until I got in sports in Junior High and one couldn't play if one didn't keep their grades up. So I worked harder at school work.

I remember when I was very young and my older, and much smarter, brother came home from Ohio State, he told everyone it is just extremely hard. He said he just couldn't hack it. So he quit college and joined the army. Well, I thought, if he can't make it in college how could I ever? So I resigned myself to never going to college. But about 15 years after graduating High School, my friends talked me into going to college. I'd tell them I'm just not smart enough. Well, they talked me into trying. So I bought Harry Lorayne's book. Smart move! Wow!

With this book I was able to have 6 pages of notes and memorize a key word for each line on the pages. So when I'd take my History exams it was always a piece of cake. I had names, dates, places, events all memorized, and it was EASY! My math classes were so much easier too. This book impacted in a positive way every class I took. With this book I was able to maintain a 4.0. Yes, that's right, a 4.0. Dumb little ole me that my brothers berated was actually the smartest one of the bunch. How? because I found out how to PROPERLY USE the brain God gave me by using Harry Lorayne's techniques!

Some of the students in college would give me the bird because they were jealous. I'd help some, who were not doing so well, with the techniques in this book and their grades would vastly improve just from spending a few minutes with them.

I wish to thank Harry for helping me by having this book available.

The title of the book is wrong though. If you work at the book (and it is fun!) you can raise your grades in a week. You can go from a 'D' or even an 'F' student to getting perfect grades on your tests if you just apply the techniques in this book. You can graduate with top honors in High School, and continue using this book in College and in Business after you get out.

I'm not paid to write this. No one asked me to. I give it 10 stars as 5 is just not nearly good enough.

You get out of it what you put into it.

I was every guidance counselor's nightmare - top 2% in standardized test scores, bottom 20% of my class. I hated school, and I hated college even more. Then I found Harry Lorayne's book and it changed my life.
My college had no maximum on the number of credits you could earn by challenging the course. After learning Harry Lorayne's methods I tested out of two and one half years of college in eight months and graduated early.
We home school our eight children and we use this book with every one of them, to great success. I'm also the director of a learning center where we use this book as well.
Read the book, do the exercises, and use the tools every day.

A memory classic tailored for struggling students

To any student, struggling academically or not, this is the definitive guide to immediately applicable, practical mnemonics for virtually every subject you'll study in school.

Lorayne begins the book like he does any of his others. He introduces the reader to the Link system of memory for memorizing lists of words, then the Peg system for memorizing numbers. He discusses the basic building blocks of his system, such as the substitution, exaggeration, and irrationality methods. After testing the reader with the new systems a bit, and rightly predicting that they will be amazed with the systems, Lorayne shows how to implement the two systems so one can memorize pretty much anything one needs to know. He explains in detail how to efficiently memorize both native and foreign vocabulary, dates in history, even math and chemisty formulas. His examples are so detailed, by the time you finish the book you'll have memorized the whole periodic table and the amendments to the Constitution!

If you've already studied Lorayne's memory system from another one of his books, it's best to skip this one; there's basically nothing new, and it's mostly geared towards students: it doesn't even have some of the systems of his other books, such as memorizing faces and names when meeting new people. The writing is very informal and speech-like, making students feel (as did I) comfortable with it all the way through. If, however, you've never studied mnemonics and are looking for a well-rounded system that you can apply to anything and everything you want to learn, this may be the only book you'll need.

Frank Zucco is an accomplished violinist and accordionist who has spent a career performing and teaching in the St. Louis area. He is retired now but gained a tremendous reputation as a teacher. Good book to get started with the accordion.

I don't claim to be an expert on accordion instruction books but this book seems to be a good starter book. I has a lot of photos and drawings to explain things and has a system of easy to harder concepts to get you going. I suppose nothing beats either an instructor taught or at least video taught program but I think this will help you get going on the accordion. From here you will know if you are a player or just playing around. I like the spiral binding. All music books should be in that format so you can play from it with out it deciding to close up on you. I only give it 4 stars rather than five because I had some questions that were not answered but I suppose that would be true of any book. I think you would be safe to buy this book. Hope that helps. Ric.

Great book for beginners

This is a great book for beginners starting to learn the accordian. It is very instructive, basic yet has a lot of good songs to start out with that cover a wide range of skill technique. You can definitely start out with this book... no need to buy anything simpler the way I did.

Beginner's book. Very basic. Not spiral bound as seen in photo.

This book is very basic and is intended for people who have no experience with written music. None. That's okay, I guess, though for a Deluxe offering I was expecting something more substantial, even if only in the later chapters. Also, the photo shows what to me looks like a spiral bound book. I prefer spiral and comb books since they fit nicely on a music stand without the book closing when you take your hand away. This book is not spiral bound; the description doesn't say it is offered as spiral so I guess some of the error is mine based on what I think I saw in the photo.

Of course, Amazon shipped promptly as usual. The book I received is absolutely brand new as expected. And for some this may be the perfect starter book. If you know anything about reading music you can learn how to operate the bellows by watching online videos and you can find bass (left hand) fingerings online and skip this book. I haven't viewed the DVD. Perhaps it's fabulous.

Alexander Wells is Without Peer in his Knowledge

Anyone who has read any of Alexander Well's texts on the aviation industry knows that he is without peer in his knowledge of the management and operations of the airline industry. He teaches what I believe is still the only course on airline management at any college in the nation and is highly respected for his work.
In this volume, he focuses specifically on the problems of risk and insurance as it applies to the airline industry. Although the book is relatively new, published in 2000, given the events in the industry in the past few years it may already be ripe for a revision. Regardless, the text provides a broad, yet concise, understanding of insurance and risk management as it applies to the aviation industry, both commerical and otherwise.
This book should be required reading for anyone considering a career in aviation management or working in the insurance industry with airlines.

These beautiful drawings take on a narrative strength when grouped together and serve to illuminate Hejduk's architectonic thoughts.
